Pets and Seniors
It’s no secret that life as a senior can sometimes be lonely. Maintaining our relationships with our families and loved ones is very important, however as we continue to adjust to life during a pandemic this can be a challenge as our in-person interactions are limited. Thankfully, here at the Hamlets at Westsyde there is another opportunity for connection: our loveable guinea pigs, Norman and Cookie!
Caring for a pet and interacting with animals can have a profound effect on our social wellbeing. Here are some of the benefits of daily interaction with animals.
Physical Health Benefits
Interaction with a pet has been found to reduce stress and lower blood pressure, high rates of which can both be detrimental to your health. Additionally, caring for and interacting with a pet increases physical activity which we know is crucial for a healthy body!
Mental Health Benefits
Pets have also been found to improve depression and feelings of loneliness. Pets are a great source of comfort and connection, not to mention excellent listeners. Interacting with Norman and Cookie here can also be a great way to make new friends with other interested residents!
Being Present
Pets can also be a wonderful reminder to live in the moment. Animals don’t carry the burden of worrying what the future holds, and their “in-the-present” attitude can be infectious.
Pets are a wonderful way to combat loneliness and find new support and connection as a senior.
