Important Considerations when Choosing a Dementia Nursing Home

Important Considerations when Choosing a Dementia Nursing Home

September 27th, 2017

Choosing a nursing home for someone else, especially a parent or loved one, can be a very stressful decision. You’re making a decision based on what you think is best, always conscious of their needs and concerns. Choosing for someone suffering from dementia can be even more difficult. There are more considerations to think about and more questions to ask. Here are a few things to consider:

1. Is this a facility you can trust?

You’re about to place someone you love into a dementia nursing home in Kamloops and you want to make sure they care just as much as you do. Check out who they are and what they stand for to make sure they will do the little extras your loved one will need.

2. Visit the facility a few times.

Guided tours can be a little packaged and artificial. Drop by the facility unannounced, at different times of the day, and see if anything’s different. Watch how the staff is taking care of the residents. Any seniors facility that’s trustworthy and above board should be happy to show you around, any time you want.
3. Check the credentials of the staff.

Are they well-trained in taking care of dementia patients? Find out what kinds of treatments they use for patients suffering from dementia and make sure that you agree with what they’ve chosen to do.

4. Check about staff turnover.

One quick way for a patient to feel disoriented and confused is by a constant turnover of staff. They want to see familiar faces that they can trust and rely on. If the facility is constantly hiring new employees, you may want to look elsewhere.

At The Hamlets at Westsyde, we treat all patients with the value and respect that they deserve and we’re well-trained at taking care of patient suffering from dementia or that may need end of life care. Please come talk to one of our helpful staff members to answer any questions you may have.
