3 New Years Resolutions for Seniors

3 New Years Resolutions for Seniors

December 23rd, 2018

As another year comes to an end, we can start to look forward to what the New Year will bring. A time honoured tradition is to set New Years Resolutions. More often than not, New Years resolutions are quickly forgotten. For the senior community in Kamloops, make 2019 the year of change by following these 3 New Year Resolutions.

  1. Being more physically active

  2. Using your brain more

  3. Finding new ways to socialize

For seniors living in Kamloops assisted living, the need to be and remain physically active Is higher than ever. Even a goal to exercise for 10 minutes a day can lead to big health improvements, such as reduced risk of heart disease and osteoporosis. Even a short walk every hour can make a big difference. Physically active people also feel better, and have more energy throughout the day.

Just as exercising the body is important, so is exercising the brain. Another New Years resolution for the senior community in Kamloops this year should be to exercise the brain more often. This can be as simple as working on the daily crossword, or playing puzzle games such as Sudoku. Also, reading is an excellent way to keep the brain active. Just like muscles, the brain will slowly deteriorate if not used, so turn of the TV, find a book, and work out those neurons.

Both of these resolutions can also contribute to the resolution of finding new ways to socialize. Being physically and mentally active does not have to be lonely and solitary. Kamloops assisted living has many like-minded individuals who may carry the same New Year’s Resolutions. Include these other seniors in your walks, work on puzzles or play a game of chess together. Find and explore new volunteer opportunities together.

Make this the year where those New Year’s resolutions are not only meaningful, but acted upon. These three simple goals can make a huge change in the life of the senior community in Kamloops.
