Tips for Seniors to Avoid Summer Dehydration

July 29th, 2019

Dehydration comes as a result of the human body not having enough water. Water is an essential thing for life, and not enough water can cause all sorts of negative consequences. On hot summer days in Kamloops, it becomes much easier for those living in a seniors village or in assisted living to become dehydrated, as the body loses more water in the heat. Here are some tips for seniors to avoid summer dehydration.

Drink throughout the day

The absolute best thing that you can do to avoid dehydration is to have a small amount of water, continuously throughout the day. Consuming a large amount at once does not provide the same hydrating effects as small, consistent amounts. In fact, drinking a large amount in a short span of time will just result in a trip to the washroom.

To help with this, try to develop some new habits. Have at least one glass of water with each meal, and one first thing in the morning. Use a water bottle so you have water with you at all times, rather than having to refill a glass over and over.

Avoid Alcohol and Caffeine

You may really enjoy these beverages, but they can have a very dehydrating effect, especially when coupled with the hot Kamloops sun. Both alcohol and caffeine are diuretics, meaning that they inhibit ADH (antidiuretic hormone) in the body, resulting in the kidneys allowing more water to pass through to the bladder. This means that your body will quickly lose water. If you can not go without that morning coffee, just make sure you limit the amount and have plenty of water afterward. You may also choose a decaf option.

Eat Lots of Fruits and Vegetables

You do not only become hydrated from drinking water, but also from the foods that you eat. Plenty of vegetables and fruits are very high in water content, and once they hit your system, your body will treat that water the same way it would if you drank some. Choosing high water foods at mealtime will help you further stave off dehydration.

Limit Strenuous Activity

It is probably best to not run a marathon during the middle of a sweltering day. With that being said, you should take it easy during the hottest times of the day. Exercise is important, so be active during cooler times, such as early mornings and evenings.

If you follow these tips, you can avoid becoming dehydrated and continue to enjoy summer life in the senior's villages in Kamloops feeling great.
