4 Fire Season Safety Tips for Seniors
Kamloops, BC, is no stranger to forest fires, and, in fact, at the time of this writing, the White Rock Lake fire is southeast of Kamloops, and the Durand Lake fire is west of Kamloops. Here are four safety tips for those living in areas where wildfires are common in the summer.
Have a Plan
The most important thing to know is where you would go if you had to evacuate. Have a plan, and communicate that plan to close friends and relatives. If you drive, then keep your gas tank full.
Emergency Kit
It is a good idea to have an emergency kit that is ready to go and to know where it is. In your kit, you may want to keep your passports, medication, first aid supplies, pet food, and any small valuables. Have a crate ready for pets. You may want to keep a couple of gallons of water, also, set aside. All of this can fit easily in a small suitcase with wheels. Maybe post of list on the fridge of things not to forget like a phone charger and laptop.
Keep Yards Tidy
If you have a yard, then keep it tidy. That means disposing of raked leaves and pruned branches. Don’t leave dry brush around which is fuel for fires. Don’t have trees growing too close to or touching the house.
Emergency Radio
An emergency radio is a good idea. There are battery-operated ones that will also give you the ability to charge a cell phone. Put some (extra) fresh batteries in the emergency kit.
These, above, are just a few safety tips, but it is always better to be prepared for the worst case scenario. We want seniors to be safe all year round.
